TRUE JOB TITLE: Sign Shop Assistant
We are seeking a Sign Shop Assistant with 3+ years of experience in a professional print or sign shop environment, ideally supporting film, television, or live events. This role supports both print production and sign fabrication, requiring hands-on technical skills, attention to detail, and strong customer service in a fast-paced environment. Support large format printing and color production using ONYX and Versaworks RIPs
Prepare final artwork files for print, including:
File setup, pre-flight checks, and color management
ICC profiling and color matching
Work with industry-standard file formats including:
JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD, EPS, AI, INDD, PDF, SVG, RAW
Raster and vector-based files
Review print proofs and make necessary adjustments to ensure quality and accuracy
Assemble signs through weeding, cutting, trimming, and finishing
Safely operate power tools and shop equipment
Handle and work with materials such as vinyl, acrylic, metal, wood, and foam board
Produce and install dimensional lettering and graphics with precise alignment
Operate CNC routers and laser cutters, including:
Software setup and programming
Material setup and equipment operation
Perform finishing tasks such as laminating, mounting, framing, and installation (indoor/outdoor)
Customer Service & Project Support
Consult with clients to understand project scope, timelines, materials, and quantities
Recommend material alternatives and fabrication methods when appropriate
Assess project feasibility and turnaround timelines
Incorporate client feedback and revisions efficiently
Provide high-volume phone, email, and in-person customer support
Assist with estimating projects and pricing production work
Qualifications
High School Diploma required
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in a print or sign shop environment
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Creative mindset with strong attention to detail
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
Experience maintaining and troubleshooting large format printers and inks
Ability to operate:
Large format printers
CNC routers
Vinyl cutters/plotters
Laminators
Prior experience working in a New York sign shop and familiarity with local vendors
